AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE July 24, 2010 J. Storey
1. the constant drone of the fan keeps me awake at night, it HAS to be unplugged !
2. when plugged back in, box will reload, then will decide to reset itself at random during viewing
3. when flicking through the channels it does not display the number of the channel, i like to see the no. so i can remember it (not much to ask)
4. memory gets filled with unwanted adverts
5. recordings often missed/deleted without warning
6. the box will now not record at all, i'm pleased i can now launch in the nearest skip
7. need i go on
JUNK!! - DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM TOPUP TV June 1, 2010 Unhappy customer (Scotland) This box is the worst piece of junk I've ever had the misfortune to purchase.
I dearly wish I'd read the other reviews which are all over the Internet on different websites describing just how bad this unit is. The main problem seems to be the software - which apparently was written by untrained, moronic monkeys, and is regularly updated by a system which causes your box to crash losing everything recorded.
You will often see your box telling you that you have "145 unread messages" - just before it freezes up completely.
Try to read those messages? They don't really exist - it is just really bad software.
There's lots of folk trying to put out helpful advice on the net - even about how to access hidden engineer menus etc. It is however all a waste of time. After hundreds of re-boots, dozens of hard drive reformats and "reverts to previous software versions" over a period of many months, one realises one has made a bad mistake in buying this rubbish from this very bad company.
I personally hope that I read soon in the press that TopUP TV has gone bust.
The hat. May 21, 2010 Ms. C. S. A. Green The product was good and the delivery time was great got to me in a good amount of time and i am happy with it. defiantly recommend this seller to other buyers.
good purchase May 21, 2010 Joseph Barry Ashdown (Linford, Thurrock, Essex) this product was a good buy and i am very happy with it, the only downside is that sometimes during frozen live t.v the box freezes or the picture becomes distorted and this lasts for about 30 seconds but apart from that this was an amazing purchase!! :)
Careful first month is not free, £20 connection fee applies. April 14, 2010 Mrs. Collins (Brighton UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the reasons I purchased this was that it included a free months trial of Top UP TV. This influenced my purchasing decision as I thought I could use the free months trial to decide if the Top Up TV element was worth keeping. When I went to activate the free months trial I was told a £20 connection fee applied. There is no mention of this in the heading nor is the heading asterisked stating that a £20 connection fee applied regardless of whether you decide to keep the Top Up TV element. This charge is 'hidden' right on the bottom of the product description on the very last sentence in brackets. So beware, free is not free. I am personally of the opinion that this borders on dishonesty as the charge is not made clear. Very few people will read the entire product description and the heading; ''Have first month on us'' with no asterisk mentioning the charge is deliberately misleading. When I contacted customer services (Top Up TV) and complained that they charge was not made clear and the heading excluded all mention of the charge I found them to be most unhelpful and they bordered on rudeness.Perhaps one of the reasons these are all returned 're-packaged' units it that others have felt the same way, nobody likes to be 'misled'.
I am so pleased I bought the unit via Amazon whose customer service is in stark contrast to Top UP TV's. As usual I received excellent helpful advice from Amazon. I at least know that if Top Up TV do not waive the charge I can return it via Amazon and get a full refund. My advice is to buy from Amazon rather than from Top UP TV directly at least you have recourse to an excellent customer service team. However, I do think Amazon should compel TOP UP TV to make this charge clear in their ad.Performance wise I found the unit quite noisy and picture quality a bit 'hazy', my other free view decoder produces a much sharper picture on the same TV. I also noticed in the technical specifications that the unit uses up to 24 watts in standby mode. This is the same as having three low energy light bulbs on 24/7 so its not particularly energy efficient or 'green'.
