cant understand the bad reviews for this box? August 10, 2010 touchingcloth Writing this review because recently purchased a Sagem recorder at twice the price. And have been very very disappointed with it.
Cant understand the poor reviews for Thompson.
I have had this recorder for over two years. Initally the first one i bought ( from tesco ) did indeed have faults, corrupting etc etc..however stuck with it, phoned helpline, sent it back, got replacement and seriously over the last two years its been virtually fault free.
I have a two year old, we record series links ( of Mr Tumble to name but one ) virtually every day. We would be lost without it. Perhaps once or twice it may of jammed etc..but considering the use...really deserves 5 stars.
The remote control is great, looks the business ( aka a lot like the Sky remote ) , the box is nice looking, and the fan is not very loud. The best i can say is the software, well the interface is excellent. Quick to respond, looks the business...all clear and well laid out.
The Sagem has now been returned to Amazon, the remote, interface, slowness..awful. Only purchased because bought a new big telly and wanted a hdmi 1080 input which Sagem has but Thompson box still using scart.
So overall, i really must jump to the defence of Thompson box mainly because of the massive disappointment ive had with the Sagem recorder - perplexed to the glowing reviews this sagem gets whilst Thompson is dissed.
Recommend, for the money - or twice the price. Were it not for the scart only option ( and these have been around a while now to be fair ) I would not hesitate to purchase another one. However, am going to try the Humax recorder with its HDMI input.
Oh Dear July 28, 2010 R. LONG (Hull, UK) I too have one of these things still occupying space. The good news is, despite the noise, it still works as a freeview receiver - at the moment. The bad news is it does nothing else. It won't record now, even though function lights inexplicably show at random. It wiped all the recorded progammes in the library informing that the 'files were corrupt'. They had worked fine - but no more. It's dead. And the 'corrupt file' message is of course bull for 'this machine is crxp'.
As for the good reviews - I would have written one just like those a few weeks back. Sadly I feel most of those happy viewers (some maybe already) will be eventually dissapointed by this piece of junk. Complete waste of money.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE July 24, 2010 J. Storey 1. the constant drone of the fan keeps me awake at night, it HAS to be unplugged !
2. when plugged back in, box will reload, then will decide to reset itself at random during viewing
3. when flicking through the channels it does not display the number of the channel, i like to see the no. so i can remember it (not much to ask)
4. memory gets filled with unwanted adverts
5. recordings often missed/deleted without warning
6. the box will now not record at all, i'm pleased i can now launch in the nearest skip
7. need i go on
Dont buy! You have been warned... June 23, 2010 Jason (Birmingham, UK) I used to own one of these boxes and I'm writing this reveiw to warn anyone thinking of buying one.
This is the biggest piece of rubbish i have ever owned and wish it broke earlier, its that bad.
It was dismal in almost everything it did. It missed countless recordings, series record would
randomly record and the following week miss a recording, programs on the HD would't play,
recordings would 'disappear', it was so loud I had to move it out of my bedroom, constant mistimed
recordings (sometimes by up to 15mins). It would just switch itself of and not come back on again
untill you unplugged it at the mains etc etc.
These are just a few of the problems, believe me there are countless more. I wont bore you
with all of them just read some of the other reveiws! I must add though top up tv is an absoult
joke and waste of money, please whatever you do, dont go near it.
In the end the HD broke completly, all the recordings were wiped and it never worked again
(2 weeks after the warranty expired)
I now own a Humax after reading favourable reveiws and its one of the best things I've ever
bought! Do yourself a favour and get one and they are very resonably priced compared to
the more expensive sony's etc. Its absolutly silent, never freezes, basically does eveything
perfectly well and has loads of brilliant features.
