I've had two of Thomson's freeview digital recorders, I took the first one back because it was rubbish, I'm going to take this one back because it's rubbish, and I'm never going to buy another. I'd suggest anyone buying a digital tv recorder go for ANY OTHER box except this one.

Unless that is, you enjoy a box that freezes constantly, needs resetting at every turn and never records the whole program you set it to record.

Maybe they'd be better utilised gutted and distributed around the countryside for mice to live in.

Actually, no, they definitely would be.

The box has nothing but problem after problem
It freezes when recording
It freezes when playing back
It freezes when deleting programs
You constantly have to unplug the machine everytime you use it, so it would be wise to invest in a remote controled switch so you don't have to go behind the TV like I do, or better still DON'T BUY THIS BOX

Last night, with much anticipation, I settled down with the whole family to watch Part 1 of the Christmas Doctor Who special, which I recorded on the Thomson on Christmas night (it's been a busy week!). We had all been looking forward to this but, about 5 minutes in, the picture froze and the dreaded permanent red light appeared on the front.

After much pressing of buttons on the Remote and the box itself, without any noticeable effect, the only way forward was to switch off and on at the wall socket and, although I didn't perform a deliberate 'reboot' (the manual warns this will delete all recordings), after several minutes of flashing red lights the menu came back with all programmes deleted! This is the third time since I bought the box 4 months ago that this has happened. As usual, a peek at the Messages menu informed me that the deletions had occurred because the programmes had 'become corrupt'. The Thomson will now be making a quick return to the shop, where I will be asking for a refund.

When I researched which model to go for, this box seemed one of the best for features and value and I didn't see many negative reviews, certainly none that indicated this sort of problem. Now though, there are plenty of them. Previously, I had one of the first generation Thomson Top-Up TV units (non-recording), and this worked fine for several years, until it suddenly died without warning. After last night's disappointment and the earlier failures, I won't be going for this brand again though. (Thankfully, BBC iPlayer saved the day yesterday, and we're all looking forward to watching Part Two tonight - this time as it's broadcast, I think!)

1 out of 5 stars Avoid: you will experience all stages of grief if you buy this machine   October 5, 2009

At first, it seems to work okay: wow, it records two channels at once, it records a whole series with just a couple of clicks. Even the minor quibbles, such as not being able to start watching a recording a specific point, are forgivable.

Then, things start to go wrong but, y'know, it was so cool before that you deny it.

Then, when you notice that it has failed to record a few episodes of your favourite programme -- and it only tells you that by displaying a message in an obscure menu somewhere -- you get angry. "Why? It was going so well! Why are you doing this to me, box?"

Then, you find yourself bargaining with it: "Come on, I don't mind if you miss Deep Space 9, just make sure you record Wallander."

When you realise that, despite it offering to automatically record the second half of the film that's shown after the news, it hasn't done anything of the sort, then you enter depression.

Finally, you accept that this is actually one of the buggiest, least reliable consumer electronics items you've ever come across and you take the heap of junk back to the shop.
