5 out of 5 stars Humax PVR9300T   July 29, 2010

A great tuner and hard disc recorder.
Easy to use once you get used to the way the system is set up. Good picture quality. I would recommed this unit to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars Good in principal but very unreliable   July 28, 2010
Brian Mccorkell (Forres, Scotland)
When I bought my Humax PVR-9300T in March 2010 it was working brilliantly.

Now this machine is freezing up on me at least once per day. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing at the time. I could be in the EPG or in the recorded list, with programs playing or being just tuned into a channel, it freezes up and will not unfreeze itself no matter how long I wait. The only way to free it is to turn it off.

That is not the only problem:

Programs can lose up to a minute's sound at the beginning of a recording accompanied by sporadic break-up of picture.
Recorded programs can just carry on fast-forwarding to the end of the recording and then freeze on the last frame with PLAY showing in the recorder's display. Any action taken using the remote control or the front panel controls is not heeded at all.
The list of recorded programs is inaccurate. There can be up to 3 versions of the same program with exactly the same dates and times showing in this list, and playing one of these does not even guarantee that that program will play. Recently it played a totally different program that was in the list situated just above it.

As a long time computer user I am used to having to wait a while when machines decide not to play ball but this one is really testing my patience. I've checked for updates and the machine says that I have the most up to date version.

I can't see that these are isolated problems on one rogue machine. I liked it so much at first that I recommended it to my girlfriend, who bought one, too. Now hers is almost as bad as mine!

Humax UK support have not even acknowledged my email, let alone given me any advice. Mind you, that was only 2 weeks ago. Maybe they're on holiday.

5 out of 5 stars Top Machine... probably the best of its kind   July 25, 2010

This is a top PVR... classy, well made and really excellent all round. It probably leaves all the rest standing and watching in admiration because I can't see any other machine getting close to this one. I won't go in to details about this that and the other but once you get used to the Humax it's got some great features. I'm still finding some new stuff it does after 4 months. The picture quality on the HDMI upscaling is top class. Recording and playback menus are very practical and straightforward to work with... overall everything works superbly. The remote control is well designed but quite different if you are used to a Sky remote. It's a doddle to set up and you should be up and watching within 10 minutes of receipt! Loads of memory space for films, documentaries and of course East Enders! The menus are easy to understand... the whole PVR being very functional. The Humax can be set to download the latest upgrade software automatically. Lots of different ways of setting up recordings... also series link is included plus you can manually set up your own single recordings. The EPG fills up very quickly... there is no fan noise... just to put these two important points in based on other reviews here. Excellent PVR Freeview HDMI upscaling recorder... totally recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Piece of Kit   July 18, 2010

This box is a total revelation for us, having just switched over from analogue to digital. The picture quality and resolution is amazing. Very close to DVD quality. The colours are really vibrant. We used to need a signal booster to get even a semi-decent picture on the old analogue TV but this doesn't need it at all.

This box has phono outputs for connecting to a surround amplifier and the sound quality is also superb when put through my Yamaha surround amp. Although, the amplitude output is very low, so the surround amplifier needs to have its volume put up very high to achieve a normal volume level. Usefully, the remote control of the Humax includes a volume control button, which allows a single remote to be used to control the volume.

The unit is totally silent in operation. The fan comes on for a few seconds at startup and then goes off. The fan also comes on briefly if the unit is on standby and starts to record. Other than that, it is totally silent.

The amazing thing is being able to record two programmes that are on at the same time, whilst watching something else that we have recorded. It can also pause live TV, so when someone calls you can just pause the telly and carry on later where you left off. It can record a whole series and, if the programme gets moved in the schedules, the box still records it no problem.

The unit is very simple to operate. Even the missus had mastered the remote control, program guide and recording within a few minutes of use. It took her years to manage to set our old VHS VCR successfully.

The program guide does take a few minutes to load but that is such a minor quibble.

I don't know how we ever managed to live without this box. Don't be put off by the old amazon reviews. Go buy one now. It is brilliant.

Remote control is a nightmare, completely unintuitive. The programme guide takes forever to load data and if you want next (or other) days, it can be in hours rather than minutes. Preferred the usablity of my old TVOnics, this just seems too softwareish and slow to react. Freezes more often than I like as well. Would not buy again.
Other than these very annoying features, it works fine. Large HD and double-record ability are good. Didn't have any noise problem and set-up is easy.
