3 out of 5 stars Hoping for better at the 2nd attempt   June 18, 2010

I bought this DVD player on the basis of two things: firstly, it looked very smart, and secondly, my TV is an LG and has always worked perfectly and was very straightforward to set up and use.

This DVD player does look smart, but unfortunately it doesnt always work perfectly and isn't particularly straightforward to use. I had a catalogue of problems with mine, which led to me returning it to Amazon, and reading other reviews it seems that I'm not the only one to have problems with this particular model. It would freeze during playback, stop recording halfway through programmes I had set, and on one occasion I tried to play something back whilst it was still recording, and it froze and then delete the entire programme (which only had about 2 minutes left to run).

The replacement is - so far - a vast improvement, and I haven't suffered any of the same problems as yet. However, there's no getting away from the difficulties with operating the recorder. The remote control is fiddly and it's difficult to work out what all of the buttons do, whilst the only comprehensible part of the recording menu is "simple recording" - there are another three options which don't make any sense, and the instruction manual doesn't shed any light. The general set up menus can be quite difficult to interpret, although I am gradually getting the hang of them.

As long as it works, this isn't a bad DVD recorder for the price, although it does take some getting used to. But if I was making my purchase again I would probably spend a bit more for something easier to use and better quality.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough   June 8, 2010

The device is a very good one.
Till now I did some recordings including with the timer without any problem.
Also viewed enough movies including some with subtitles.
The only problem I had was with some videos from my PC which the device could not play, but not so many, in a ratio of 3/10
Also another small issue is with usb devices. With a 16gb one was unable to read the movies. With a 8gb was ok but a bit slow in the begining.

4 out of 5 stars A good bit of kit   May 30, 2010

Easy to set up and use. It would be nice to be able to watch one channel while recording another. I know we can watch analogue TV whilst recording a digital channel but that will change with the ending of analogue tv. But very good picture and recordings and the ability to edit a recording prior to dvd recording is very useful. However I am very satisfied with the recorder.

2 out of 5 stars Complicated and unreliable   May 19, 2010

Good value for money, looks great, and match's the LG TV we have nicely. However, as my wife and I have just upgraded from the 'VCR age' this machine is certainly not easy to use. On occasion it doesn't record, or do what you want it to, and yes the subtitles are a pain as other reviewers have said (you can get rid of them though). Most annoying is its random refusal to eject the disc for you with no logical explanation what ever. Shouting at it doesn't seem to work either.

The instructions are rubbish and don't cover important things like whether you can tape to disc whilst watching hard drive for instance, or visa versa. It seems you have to learn what you want to do via trial and error,(and some more shouting).

Obviously I cannot comment on other makes around the same value, they may all have the same quirks. But my wife and I are not impressed. Technology is supposed to be advancing and getting easier isn't it ??
