Sony Hard Drive DVD July 20, 2010 Steve I have had DVD hard drive recorders before and know what to expect in terms of functionality. E.G. editing, fast forwarding, high speed dubbing. I thought that the Sony brand would provide for my needs. Boy was I disappointed with this model. This machine insults the Sony brand name, I intend to get rid of it as soon as possible and buy a real DVD hard Drive.
Worst Piece of Kit I've Ever Bought - Anywhere July 19, 2010 R. G. Elwell (Uk) I bought this a few months ago. The controls are very slow. It takes ages to come alive when you switch it on. DVDs take ages to load. What's even worse, though, is that it can't dub programmes from the HDD to DVDs at all. It just locks up and I can't even turn it off when it's clear that the thing isn't going to complete the task. I've trashed several discs trying to dub, all to no avail. I've sent an email to Sony customer service and await their suggestions. I hope it's me doing something wrong, because otherwise this has been a total waste of money for me.
1 star? I'd rather give it none.
How I wish I'd never bought it...
Disapointing July 17, 2010 S. B. Birks As a HDD recorder it would score 3 stars. The quality of the recording is fine but the freeview tuner is not great. The picture when both watching through the box and on recording jumps and breaks up more frequently than my £20 Goodmans freeview box. It is possible to download DIVX files from a PC using a USB pen drive and store them on the hard drive. This is where its weaknesses start to show. If a TV recording is stopped the box remembers the point and will play from that point when you restart it. For a DIVX file it wont so you have to fast forward from the start, except that it will only fast forward at 2x speed so it takes ages, normal recordings fast forward at 8x speed. Also although you can watch a normal recording while recording another program it is not possible to watch a DIVX program while recording something else.
As a DVD player it hardly scores any points at all. OK it plays normal DVDs but I have many DVDs created from my PC and created by small companies like local history groups. These use a VOB file format and play on our old Sony player and on every other DVD player that I have tried. This machine will not play VOB files only DIVX. That may not be to bad, its possible to convert VOB to DIVX but the DIVX standard allows for the creation of menus and chapters just like a normal DVD. This player just ignores a menu created this way and just plays the program. As with a DIVX from the hard drive it will not remember the location it was stopped at. It seems as if Sony only want you to play the type of DVDs that they create and nothing else. I do not know about files put on a DVD from a camcorder but I would check that it can play them before you consider buying this.
There are many other problems which make this machine frustrating to use, some have been highlighted in other reviews but there are too many to list here.
I have a feeling that only playing DIVX and not VOB files may not be restricted to only this machine so consider buying a simple HDD recorder and seperate DVD player. As mentioned in other reviews the copy from the hard drive to a DVD is rubbish anyway and so not worth having.
In summary avoid this machine and if you have any non standard DVDs then test them on any machine you might consider buying.
good July 16, 2010 A W Atherton Excellent machine , a bit noisy and instruction manual could have been a little more simpler
Crashing Sony DVD Recorders July 12, 2010 Reveredcivilservant If anyone is contemplating buying a Sony DVD recorder, I would urge you to think again. About a year ago now, I bought RDR-HXD910. It was a very expensive machine, being one of the first PVR's to have a HDMI output. Right from the start, it kept crashing. I've kept the machine, owing to the fact, that on the rare occasion it's behaving itself, the performance is exemplary! But all too often, it freezes and I have to disconnect it all. Not good! Take my advice - stay clear of Sony PVR's - they're rubbish! Buy a Humax FoxSat instead!
