Good but has it's quirks! July 26, 2010 28daysearlier (Cornwall, UK) Found this really easy to install. Just plugged in and it picked up the TV signal and tuned in itself. The DVD player is great and the upscaling is a great improvement to my DVDs...who needs Blue Ray. The Freeview and EPG works fine and it is really easy to set up a timer recording or series recording. This alone has transformed my TV habits as i hardly ever miss an episode so always have plenty of what i want to watch.
There are however problems which mean that i can't give this the rating i really would like to. I plugged this in to a Toshiba Regza TV that already has Freeview. The EPG on that was great. It was fast, clear and really easy to use. The red button features were also lightening fast. Obviously because the Freeview on the RD329DTKB takes precedence over the TV becuase the freeview + features wouldn't work from the TV Freeview. I would hope that the player freeview was at least as good as the the TV Freeview but it isn't. It is less refined, slower and the red button is slower and frequently doesn't work at all. It (very infrequently) gives you a blank screen when selecting a channel from the EPG and sometimes even gives you the wrong channel. the EPG also doen't have channel numbers. I can remember a few and i forgotton the majority becuse they are not displayed in the EPG, but not all so i can't shortcut using the EPG by just selecting the numbers on the remote. It means i have to pull up the EPG and scroll when i search for channels outside the 5 or 6 i use on a regular basis.
Also while the basic features on the Freview + and HDD are very simple to work out and are instinctive the other functions are not so instinctive and i have to resort to the manual and the way they actually work doesn't really make any sense. I can get them to work by following the manual but i would not say that they are in any way instinctive.
That said there are more good things about this than bad and i am very happy with my purchase.
CAUTION July 20, 2010 Mr Simon J B Elvin CAUTION! I bought this unit from Amazon and was initially happy with it. Good features, easy to use. However, it developed a fault in the first month, where it powered itself down at random, then would not switch on again unless I unplugged it and then plugged it in again. Consequently I lost a few recordings because it powered down while recording.
I feel a bit mean giving this one star, because it has great features and I really liked it. But it broke down. Toshiba told me that they have not heard of this problem with this model, so hopefully you'll be luckier than I was. All technology is dodgy when it comes to it!
I should also warn that returning this to Amazon has been a trial. EVENTUALLY they have replaced it with another model, but they wanted to refund me as they didn't have any more of this model in stock and they wouldn't have it repaired. Toshiba told me that Amazon bought the warranty off them so Amazon are responsible for it. So no repair, no replacement, just a refund of what I paid. But the best price I could find to replace it is about £100 more than I paid first time. I couldn't see why I should buy something, have it break down and then pay loads extra to get it back. It took persistence and negotiation on my part to get a satisfactory outcome and the customer service person at Amazon just kept telling me the same line while I tried to suggest options available to them. It took a supervisor to have a conversation and get a result. I have to say, the supervisor was helpful and found a solution. But only because I didn't accept what I was told at first.
My advice, know your rights and then be polite and factual if you have to complain. This is internet shopping!
Excellent product July 10, 2010 Cotun
I've owned this HDD/DVD recorder for about a month now and I've been very pleased with the quality of it. I have to confess first of all that I haven't used all the features of the device, I've mainly used it for recording programmes from Sky and also dubbing them to DVD where necessary. For this, it has been excellent overall with no real problems.
I believe the following issues are notable:-
* The 320GB hard disk is easily large enough for it's purpose and can record so much TV on the medium quality modes that I haven't had to worry about transferring things to DVD at all. This has been invaluable during the World Cup when the games were coming thick and fast. I have been recording at a quality where I can fit four hours of footage on a single DVD. The picture quality at this level is not wonderful by any means, but perfectly watch-able. I can't remember the amount of video that can be recorded on this level, but it was around 400 hours I believe.
* I have heard that not all hard disk recorders allow you to record from SCART, they only allow you to record from the internal Freeview tuner. I can confirm this is not the case with this recorder.
* The reliability seems excellent. I haven't lost a single programme since I brought this.
Overall, a very good product and I'm glad I brought it.

Toshiba RD329DTKB 320 GB HDD DVD recorder June 26, 2010 the apple First one had to go back as the sound didn't work however Amazon were very quick in sending out a replacement. The DVD recorder is easy to set up and the quality is first class - far better than the Sony it has replaced. There is a facility to copy from the HDD onto DVD disk quickly - a 2 hour film takes about 25 minutes to do with no discernable drop off in quality. In conclusion I am very please with the product and with the service from Amazon which can only be described as excellent
