Panasonic 250GB HDD DVD Recorder model DMR-EX83EB-K September 7, 2010 brian 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The entry of the first HDD DVD piece of equipment into the household saw some 100 VHS tapes transferred to the waste bin. To my amazement the Panasonic euipment jumped into life with extreme simplicity and we have been totally sold by it. It cantains the Freeview tuner and so we were able to receive digital quality pictures on our old analog TV. The next challenge is to transfer some important VHS tapes which have been retained onto DVD's. This means connecting up my old Sony VHS recorder to the Panasonic and then try to the transfer recording. This I ma sure is going to be a challenge.
The instuction book is awesome all 99 pages of it! It is diffucult to read and there seem to be many aspects which are totally beyond my comprehension. However this piece of equipment has totally changed our ability to record any progamme with ease. A truly magic pice of gear.
Panasonic dvd recorder review September 6, 2010 Richard Henry Webb (Leeds, West Yorkshire United Kingdom) Delivery of the item was excellant. It was very easy to set up and use. So far I am impressed with the recordings. The are many useful facilities which I have yet to use. All in all a good purchasing experience and I very much like the dvd recorder.
Panasonic High Quality August 27, 2010 Bacardi Brian Stylish and of high build quality. Easy to install following the instructions provided. Set up of Freeview is a doddle. Works straight out of the box. Recommended - you won't be diasappointed. Amazon's pricing make this a snip!
Aspirational August 25, 2010 Terry Broome (Wakefield, W Yorks) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
As with all Panasonic's DVD/Hard Drive recorders (and most other manufacturers, come to that), it really only works well at recording programmes onto the hard drive. These are acceptable machines for backing up the odd programme onto DVD disc, but you cannot connect an external hard drive to back up the content of the built-in one - at least not directly (you can use video cables to connect the machine to another pvr or computer, but then you'll have to manually split and edit all the seperate recordings yourself).
The inability to back up to a hard drive means that the machine will always be aspirational (in other words, Panasonic is selling you a host of gadgets you will never use or one day regret that you did). To my mind, there is no point storing photos or music on the machine as a result. In addition, the ability to organise these media is severely limited.
I quickly gave up trying to use my older Panasonic machine for anything other than recording the tv. I don't want to lose all my photos and music if the machine dies on me. I don't want to go through the trouble of recording them all again (assuming I've got the originals somewhere safe).
Instead, I went for a NAS box with a built-in DLNA service. I've burned/am burning all my DVDs, photos and CDS onto it and streaming them to the TV/stereo with the WDLive+. The DVDs and CDS then get archived in the loft. If one drive fails, I replace it with a new one and lose nothing. I can even back it up to another NAS device or hard drive. At some point one of the PVR or TV companies will release a fully-featured DLNA Blu-ray player/pvr/tv and I'll be able to get rid of the WDLIVE, my hifi separates and all the old gear in one go. My living room will have a simple TV and soundbar, with the NAS tucked away in the loft. No more mass of cables and re-recording my entire media collection when the PVR kicks the bucket. If you can afford this route (I've slowly built my home network up), this is a much more flexible and by far, safer, option.
Get PVRs for their ability to record the TV, ignore everything else.

Bit Of A Dissapointment August 23, 2010 Lincsman 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Well, a bit dissapointed with this purchase to be honest. Bought it as a replacement for a previous model (DMR-EX85 - the Freeview tuner failed).
3 problems so far. 1 - It seems to run a lot slower than the previous model, especially when deleting recordings. 2 - No Analogue tuner, And more importantly, 3 - Programmes selected from the Programme Guide are not always recorded & twice so far them machine has just stopped in the preparing to record mode (Rec LED on & clock flashing 00:00:00) & does not record the programme or any subsequent programmes (needs a power reset to cure).
Actually, sitting here writing this, shouldn't have to put up with these problems on a brand new machine - so, I think it's going to go back for a refund. Sorry Amazon, not your fault - expected better from a top brand like Panasonic.
